It is important to give kids simple drawing exercises, like this baby monkey cartoon character, to boost confidence in drawing skills.
This drawing exercise incorporates simple shapes to teach young artists about basic elements that are used in drawing any object. It can be done with only a pencil and paper, but encourage the artist to use a wide range of media such as pastels, colored pencils, watercolors, markers and ink to make the baby monkey colorful and one-of-a-kind.
Drawing Baby Monkey’s Head
Start the baby monkey by drawing the head using these steps:
Draw a circle for the head. See Illustration 1. (Click on the illustrations to make them bigger and easier to see.)
Draw a half-circle or C-shape on each side of the head for ears.
Draw a circle or egg shape at the bottom of the head, overlapping the bottom line of the head.
Put two black dots at the top of the monkey’s head for eyes. Erase a little square of black for a highlight. See Illustration 2.
Put two lines in the shape of a letter V that has been cut in the middle for the nose.
Draw a curve for the mouth and question marks for details in the ears.
All cartoon characters can be drawn with simple shapes. Circles and cylinders are the most common shapes used. Follow these steps to compose simple shapes into the baby monkey’s body:
Draw a circle that overlaps with the monkey’s head. Erase the part that overlapped onto the head or simply draw a fat U-shape underneath the head instead of a circle. Put a black dot in the center for a bellybutton. See Illustration 3.
Draw half a cylinder or a fat C-shape on each side of the body for arms.
Draw two half-cylinders or chubby U-shapes on the bottom of the monkey for legs.
Draw a long, bendy cylinder for a tail.
Add toes by making little U-shapes facing downward on each foot.
Drawing the Details
To make the little monkey extra special, the artist should add some cute baby stuff to the drawing.
Add a diaper by drawing a curved line around the belly under the bellybutton.
Add some drool to the baby’s mouth and chin by drawing a U-shape topped with a downward facing V-shape.
Add a baby tooth by drawing half a square on the mouth.
Hair can be added to the top of the head by drawing curly loops. Of course, the artist may want to get creative and add pigtails, an afro or a Mohawk to add to the individual style of their monkey.
Once the color is added, the cartoon baby monkey drawing is done.
