There is a day set aside for artists to gain recognition for their work. June 7, 2008 is a day that should be marked on all artists' calenders: Drawing Day.

Drawing Day is a wide spread event, spanning websites such as deviantART, DrawSpace, and ratemydrawing.com, with over 7,000 artists already expected to take part and more being encouraged to join in.

What is Drawing Day?

Drawing Day is a non-profit event in which artists across the Internet are entreated to draw for the day, and post their work online for all to see and admire. It was envisioned by Mick Gow and many others, in hopes of bring attention to the unrecognised artists. They want to see the unappreciated get the attention they deserve for the work they have done in the name of art.

Created by a group that is passionate about illustration and art in general, Drawing Day has the current goal of having one million drawings uploaded on the 7th. While the number looks quite high, it has been said that even getting 10% of the million would be an enormous accomplishment for the artists involved, though they will continue to strive for the 'magic million.' They are hoping for this to be a annual event, held the first Saturday of every June.

Is anyone allowed to participate? How do you participate?

No one with the will and heart to draw is excluded from the Drawing Day event. There is no need to sign up to take part, or anything to buy. As long as there is paper and pencil on hand, it is possible to participate. The only thing asked of those participating is that they post their work on the Internet, with many of the sites taking part listed on the website for Drawing Day. The artist is asked to mention Drawing Day along with their art, both to give the event and the art itself more recognition.

Artists of all different levels and professions are asked to join, from the new hobby artist to the seasoned professional illustrator. The only limitations are the limitations placed by the artists themselves; there is no drawing that will be disallowed, whether it be a doodle or a full fledged book illustration, or digital or traditional.

Interesting. I was unaware of Drawing Day until I read this article and artists need to be noticed and encouraged and able to express themselves.
